Creating better outcomes for Australia

Returning to the Foundation

Christmas Message by Pastor Matthew Lalor

Pastor Matthew Lalor and his wife Louise Lalor

It has become increasingly clear that the Australian way of life is under pressure. Although we have been spared major wars in recent times, many fail to recognise that a different kind of conflict—a cultural war—has been raging for years. This culture war touches every sphere of society: education, entertainment, health, media, government, and the legal system.

There are influential sinister voices working to pull our nation away from the Christian valuesheld by previous generations. Some envision a nation shaped by increasing government control, believing that more regulation is the answer to every problem. We saw similar forces at work in the United States with the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Partly the reason he was such a
target was he helped people understand that private faith does not exist—that what we believe always shapes the world around us.

Many people today insist that faith should remain a private matter, yet in reality, private beliefs always produce public consequences. This is common sense, though in recent years common sense itself seems to be becoming rare.

If a person truly believes there is no God, no judgment, and no accountability, and if they see life as ‘survival of the fittest’, then we should not be surprised when they act accordingly. Yet deep down we know such actions are wrong, and that morality must rest on something more solid than shifting human opinion.

Old-Fashioned Values

Many Australians still value loyalty, faithfulness, mateship, and helping others. These qualities have helped shape our nation into one of the best places to live on earth. But in many ways, we have drifted from the foundation that gave rise to those values.

This Christmas, my prayer is that you return to the cornerstone of these healthy values. May you be spiritually awake—not ‘woke’—and may you have the courage to stand on firm convictions rather than walk on eggshells.
I pray that your moral compass will be calibrated to truth, not confused by the instability of our changing culture.

The simple truth is this: if we desire to return to the Christian values that once shaped our nation, we must first return to Christ. He is the foundation upon which everything else rests.

Perhaps you are reading this and wondering, How do I set my moral compass on truth? How do I return to the foundation?

The Bible teaches that sin separates us from God, and that all have sinned and fall short of His glory. It also tells us that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.

Like any gift, you can choose to refuse it or receive it. God’s gift is offered freely to all, and the Bible says we receive it by confessing with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in our heart that God raised Him from the dead.

I encourage you to open your heart to the God who loves you—so much so that He sent His Son to die for your sake, to deal fully with the problem of sin and give you a new heart. A heart aligned with truth.

Find a church that believes the Bible, and commit yourself to strengthening it. As the Church goes, so goes the nation. It is time for our nation to return to its foundation without shame—transforming culture one heart at a time and fostering strong convictions, strong marriages, strong families, strong businesses, and strong churches.

Australia may be known as the “lucky country,” but those who understand know it is more than luck. Proverbs 13:34a “Godliness makes a nation great.” Let’s all play our part in making our nation great by the grace of God.
